History of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day- as we know it today in the United States- started with activist Ann Jarvis. In 1868, she started a committee dedicated to “Mother’s Friendship Day” to foster friendship and community between mothers on both sides of the Civil War. Other sources say that Ann Jarvis called for “Mother’s Work Days” to improve the conditions of the soldiers on both sides of the war.
Ann’s daughter, Anna Reeves Jarvis, established a day of observation in 1908, the first “modern” Mother’s Day.
It became official in 1914 when Woodrow Wilson signed the second Sunday into May as official Mother’s Day.
Sadly, Anna Reeves Jarvis became unhappy with Mother’s Day as it became increasingly commercialized.
Other countries have their own versions of Mother’s Day, some much older than the United State’s version. The English version- Mothering Sunday– dates back to the 16th century!
