Never Buy Green Onions Again!

Yes, I’m serious. You never, ever have to buy green onions again.

I thought this idea was crazy. That there was no way it was ever going to work. But I said to myself: “Self, part of your job as The Housewife Modern is to test stuff…so let’s give it a try.”

It’s easy, takes practically no time. But just in case, I took step-by-step pictures as well as some “after a certain amount of time” pictures.

Don’t those look good? I grew them myself- this was after approximately two weeks (the picture above)

It’s easy to do. Take some green onions. I used the slightly wilted ones I had forgotten about in my fridge.

Trim off the roots just a little. Then cut about 1″ above the white part (see picture below).

Prop up in a pint mason jar with a couple of inches of water. Place in a window with sunlight.

The 4th picture is after about a week.

The 5th is the great one of about 2 weeks later!

And the last one was yesterday (about two months after starting this). We’ve been eating a lot. I think I’m going to trim the roots and “start over” with the ones I have. That should encourage growth.

After 3-4 weeks of growing. I've been snipping off bits to eat whenever I want to.

After about 2 months. Starting to get too many roots and growth slowed down. Going to repeat the whole thing with those left in the jar!

Thanks for posting this. I wouldn’t have believed it either and probably wouldn’t have given it a try. Now I will! 🙂

You’re welcome! Trust me, when I first saw this, I thought it was impossible too. In fact, I tried it out just to prove it wrong. (I’m a stubborn redhead…haha).
      Hope you find this useful.
